Autumn invites us to slow down and reconnect with ourselves. As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, I find it easier to step back from the rush of daily life and focus on what truly matters: taking time for myself.
This season offers a perfect backdrop for practicing self-care through slow living. I want to share five principles that have helped me embrace this gentle rhythm, blending simple pleasures like good books, walks among fallen leaves, and the warm glow of candles into my routine.

1. Choose Books That Nourish Your Soul
One of the first ways I slow down in autumn is by selecting books that invite reflection and calm. I avoid anything too fast-paced or stressful. Instead, I reach for novels with rich descriptions of nature, memoirs that explore personal growth, or poetry that captures the quiet beauty of the season. Reading becomes a ritual, a chance to pause and breathe deeply.
For example, last autumn I read The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The story’s themes of healing and renewal felt especially comforting as the leaves changed colour outside my window. I set aside 30 minutes each evening to read by candlelight, which helped me unwind and prepare for restful sleep.
2. Take Walks That Connect You to Nature
Walking among the fallen leaves is a simple but powerful way to slow down. I make it a point to leave my phone behind or on silent, so I can fully experience the sights, sounds, and smells of autumn. The crunch of dry leaves underfoot and the cool breeze remind me to be present.
I often choose a nearby field lined with trees where I can walk my favourite pooch Freddie and escape. Sometimes I collect a few colourful leaves or cones to bring home as little reminders of the season. These walks are not about exercise or speed but about savouring the moment and letting my mind rest.
3. Create a Cosy Atmosphere with Candles and Warm Textures
As the daylight fades earlier, I find comfort in creating a warm, inviting space at home. Lighting candles with gentle scents like cinnamon, vanilla, or butterscotch adds a soothing ambiance. I pair this with soft blankets, knitted socks, and a favourite mug filled with herbal tea.
This cosy environment encourages me to slow down and enjoy simple activities like journaling, or listening to calming music. It’s a way to honour my need for rest and comfort without distractions.

4. Practice Mindful Moments Throughout the Day
Slow living is not just about big rituals; it’s also about small, mindful moments. I remind myself to pause during daily tasks and check in with how I feel. For instance, when I make a cup of tea, I focus on the warmth of the cup in my hands and the aroma rising from the mug.
I also use deep breathing exercises to centre myself when I feel overwhelmed. These brief pauses help me stay grounded and prevent stress from building up. Over time, these small moments add up to a greater sense of calm and presence.
5. Prioritise Time Alone Without Guilt
Finally, I have learned to give myself permission to say no to social obligations and carve out time alone. This can feel challenging, especially when family and friends expect my presence. But I remind myself that self-care is essential for my well-being and allows me to show up more fully for others.
I schedule regular “me time” in my calendar, treating it as non-negotiable. Whether it’s an afternoon spent reading, a quiet walk, or simply sitting with a cup of tea, this time recharges me. It’s a gift I give myself each autumn to nurture my body and spirit.

Slowing down in autumn has transformed how I care for myself. By choosing nourishing books, walking mindfully among the leaves, creating cosy spaces, practicing mindfulness, and honouring my need for solitude, I find a deeper sense of peace. This season reminds me that self-care is not a luxury but a vital practice.
